Bio-fuel from Power Plant Emissions

Flagship Fleet Management

(Last update: 9/25/07)

The Redhawk Power Station is a gas fired power plant that is testing a promising option to CO2 sequestering.  Bio-reactors containing algae convert CO2 into ethanol and bio-diesel.  The current test site shows 11,000 gallons of ethanol and bio-diesel can be produced per acre/annually, while removing 150 tons of CO2 from the atmosphere.

It is estimated that 2,000 acres (~3.2 square miles) would be required to scrub all the CO2 the plant generates with the current technology.  At this size you would get 22 million gallons of bio-fuel and 300,000 tons of CO2 removed from the atmosphere.  Currently the project is moving to phase II.  Phase II will use bigger bio-reactors and improve on the lessons from phase I of the project.   Making green profitable will make it happen.

GTL Kerosene, Jet Fuel from Natural Gas

Flagship Fleet Managment

(Last update: 6/5/08)

GTL (Gas to Liquid) Kerosene.  This synthetic fuel can replace jet fuel without modification to an airliner, cleaner burning as well.  Would seem others in the world are more innovative then the USA.  The time is ripe for this new technology.

Ethanol from corn takes as much fuel to produce as it gives.  To make a dent in the carbon foot print or economic viability requires a different process.  Large investments are currently being made in companies that are working to make ethanol from any bio mass.  In effect making fuel from weeds and garbage.  Ethanol made this way can cost $1.00 per gallon to produce.  Time estimates to bring this to market are being dramatically shortened.  1) Investors can now clearly see the potential.  2) It is economically viable (especially with gas over $3 per gallon.)  3) People want to be green.  It is time.

Flagship is a Global Contributor

Flagship Fleet Management

(Last update: 6/20/07)

Flagship Fleet Management has donated a fleet management system to the FACES (http://www.faces-kenya.org/index.php) global health program to manage the vehicles that distribute medical supplies through-out Kenya.  Flagship Fleet Management is doing it's part to contribute to our global community.

FACES is a program of the AIDS Research Institute at UCSF, the Women's Global Health Imperative and the Kenya Medical Research Institute

Family AIDS Care and Education Services (FACES) is an HIV/AIDS care and treatment program in Western Kenya and Nairobi. FACES is a collaboration between the Kenya Medical Research Institute (KEMRI) and the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF), funded through the US President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR). AIDS deaths in Kenya have a profound and increasing societal and economic impact. Life expectancy in Kenya has dropped from 60 years in 1993 to 47 years due to the impact of HIV/AIDS1. The worst affected area is Western Kenya, where the prevalence is 15-40%. Formed in September 2004, FACES mission is to provide accessible comprehensive care and support services to HIV affected families and other vulnerable populations in Kenya, reinforce prevention practices, and train Kenyan health workers in scientifically sound HIV/AIDS care.

Replacement Analysis

Flagship Fleet Management

(Last update: 2/25/05)

With budget short falls in California now more them ever it is import to understand why replacement analysis is so important.  The replacement budget can become an easy target unless you have the solid argument to purchase new equipment vs. age the fleet.  It is a fact the older the fleet the more money it will take to maintain it. Parts & Labor cost will go up. Additional staff and infrastructure may be needed to handle the increased work. Older equipment is less efficient then newer equipment. New equipment is usually more efficient and powerful then latter models. Older equipment will be down longer then newer equipment. With an aging fleet equipment may not be available and services may slip. Technical innovations will shorten many of the tasks heavier equipment will perform, possibly with less fuel. Fuel economy alone can be a powerful incentive. What would happen if your fleet was 20%-30% more fuel-efficient?

Where is the economically optimum replacement point?  It is import to take into consideration all the above factors when making replacement decisions, however, in reporting we are limited to factors we can assign a value to based on fleet operations data.  Most seasoned fleet managers have a keen insight into the best point to replace equipment, although, insight is easily dismissed during a budget meeting with sharp pencils.

The economically optimum replacement point equipment is to be replaced is difficult to quantify, however, if you apply the best information possible to the problem you can come close.  First we need to understand all the factors involved before we make a clear decision.  Not every factor can be pinned down to a specific mathematical calculation.  It may be possible to assign a variable, however, it could become a full time job.  Flagship has picked several quantifiable figures and left other factors to the skill of the Fleet Manager.  See our Replacement Analysis under Enhancement.

BIODiesel!

Flagship Fleet Management

(Last update: 1/22/05)

We at Flagship are excited about BIODiesel!  This is one of the few ideas that has the possibility of becoming a serious solution.  Clean burning Diesel fuel form soybeans.  BIODiesel can also be created from other plants as well.  One plant at the top of the list is palm.  The palm currently holds the highest efficiency ratio of turning plant into clean burning fuel.  We are exited about the potential of turning major fuel sources from the middle east to the mid west.  Their is a new magazine (www.bbibiofuels.com) dedicated to the development of BIODiesel.  Get in the know of this exciting new technology.
